MSc thesis supervision: “Extending IIoT Capabilities: KPI Monitoring and Heterogeneous Sensor Integration”
Supervised two MSc students who integrated a KPI-monitoring system into an existing industrial IoT environment, comparing a PLC + edge gateway architecture with a standalone edge gateway, backed by a simulation environment.

As industrial systems become more connected, extending existing IIoT installations with new capabilities becomes a practical engineering problem of its own. The students investigated how to add KPI monitoring to an already-connected IoT environment, with particular attention to integrating heterogeneous sensors (digital and Modbus).
They evaluated two hardware architectures for real-time acquisition, preprocessing and transmission: a PLC combined with an edge gateway, and a standalone edge gateway. Since physical testing was limited, they also built a simulation environment for early validation. Edge-side strategies such as aggregation, sampling and change detection reduced bandwidth while keeping the data accurate. Both architectures nearly met the requirements. The PLC improved determinism and accuracy, and the standalone gateway was simpler to integrate.
My background in embedded telemetry at iData mapped closely onto this topic.
