PDF editor

Edit PDFs in your browser: change the text that is already there, add text, images and signatures, fill in forms, highlight, draw and redact, and merge, reorder, rotate and delete pages. Nothing is uploaded.

Open a PDF to edit

Drop PDFs or images here, or choose them. Several files are merged into one document, in the order you pick them.

Your files stay on this device: they are opened, edited and saved in your browser, never uploaded.

What it does

  • Completely free: no account, no watermark, no upload. Files are opened, edited and saved in your browser
  • Change the PDF's own text. Click a line, retype it, and it is written over the original in a matching font, size and colour
  • Add text in five fonts that cover accented, Greek and Cyrillic letters, with size, colour, alignment and wrapping
  • Fill in forms (text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons and lists), then keep them fillable or flatten them
  • Sign with a drawn, typed or uploaded signature, and tick, cross or dot boxes
  • Highlight, draw freehand, add rectangles, ellipses, lines, arrows and comments, and cover anything with white-out
  • Redaction that removes the text for good, and Find to highlight or redact every match of a word at once
  • Merge PDFs and images, drag pages into order, rotate, duplicate, insert blank pages, delete or extract them
  • A page organizer for long documents. It shows every page in a grid where you can select by dragging a box or by odd and even pages, then move, reverse, delete or insert pages anywhere
  • Opens password-protected files and saves with AES-256 password protection, a title and an author
  • Undo and redo for every change, keyboard shortcuts, zoom, and thumbnails that show your edits

Why I built it

Most online PDF editors upload your file to their server, put the useful tools behind a subscription, or stamp a watermark on the result. That is a poor deal for contracts, forms and anything with an ID number on it. This one runs entirely in your browser: the file never leaves your device, and every tool is free.

How editing the existing text works

A PDF stores text as letters placed on the page, not as paragraphs you can reflow, so no editor can change it the way a word processor would. With Edit text, you click a line; the editor covers it in the colour of the paper around it and writes your version over it, in the closest matching font (Arial, Times or Courier metrics), size, angle and colour. That is how most PDF editors do it, and it looks the same on screen and in print.

The original letters stay in the file under the cover, though. If the old text must not be recoverable, use Redact, or tick Remove what is under white-out for good when you download.

Redaction you can trust

Black boxes drawn over text are a classic leak: the text is still there to copy. Here, a page with redactions is saved as an image of the page with the boxes burned in, so nothing under them survives. The cost is that the rest of that page can no longer be selected or searched; pages without redactions keep their text. Find can mark every match of a name or number for redaction in one go.

Tips

  • Merge files by choosing several at once, or by dropping more onto the page list: where you drop them is where they go. Images become pages of their own.
  • Select several pages with Ctrl or Shift in the page list, then rotate, move, duplicate, delete or download just those.
  • Organize long documents with Organize above the page list: every page opens in a grid. Drag a box around pages, or pick the odd or even ones (handy for scans of two-sided paper), then drag them anywhere, send them to a page number, reverse them or delete them. Drop files between two pages to insert them there, and double-click a page to edit it.
  • Copy objects between pages with Ctrl C and Ctrl V: a signature placed once can go on every page that needs it.
  • Comments become real PDF notes: they open in Acrobat, Preview, Edge and Chrome.
  • Make room by dragging the editor's right or bottom edge (it can grow to the width of your window), and the borders of the page list and the side panel. Double-click a handle to put it back; the sizes are remembered in this browser.

Privacy

Your files are opened, edited and saved in this browser tab, and they are not stored anywhere: closing the tab closes the document. The only thing remembered between visits is the look of each tool (colours, sizes and fonts), in this browser.
